Lisa M. Campisi

Biography

Lisa M. Campisi represents corporate policyholder clients in high-profile insurance coverage disputes. She brings more than 25 years of experience as a trusted high-level adviser to her clients in all insurance-related areas of their businesses. She has wide-ranging experience in litigating insurance coverage cases, and has been retained as an insurance litigator, adviser, and counselor for a broad array of clients, including financial services firms, private equity firms and their portfolio companies, hedge funds, and numerous Fortune 100 companies.

Chambers USA notes that clients describe Lisa as “‘very smart, creative and hard-working,’” and also praise her “‘very practical and common-sense approach.’” She counsels and litigates insurance coverage issues for clients across virtually all types of insurance coverage, including:

In addition to her extensive litigation experience, Lisa also has broad experience in advising on underwriting, claims handling, and other insurance-related and risk management issues. Such experience applies to both domestic and foreign markets and includes providing advice on all insurance aspects of mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, and other transactions, including providing consultation and advice in the placement and negotiation of transactional-related coverage.

Prior to joining Blank Rome, Lisa worked in the litigation department of a global law firm where her practice focused on insurance coverage litigation and insurance counseling.

Experience

  • Co-lead attorney in prosecuting claims for insurance coverage for separate multimillion-dollar settlements on behalf of a large international investment bank client under a run-off professional services/management liability policy. Briefed, argued, and obtained a summary judgment declaring coverage for the client’s underlying $35 million settlement. Litigation ultimately resulted in a nine-figure settlement on terms favorable to the client.
  • As lead attorney on behalf Patriot Bank, NA, obtained full recovery of losses resulting from a borrower fraud and forgery in connection with a bridge loan provided by Patriot to Seaboard Realty, LLC for the construction of a Marriott Residence Inn on Atlantic Street in Stamford, CT.
  • Lead attorney in the full recovery of nearly $10 million in losses under a crime insurance policy on behalf of a premier accounting and business management firm based in Los Angeles and New York, with an “AA-List” roster of celebrity clients, stemming from employee theft from one of the firm’s highest-profile celebrity clients.
  • Lead attorney in a complex, multi-insurer environmental insurance coverage case pending in state court seeking coverage for environmental liabilities in excess of $50 million on behalf of a multinational manufacturer of specialty steel products. Upon seeking summary judgment under a specialty pollution legal liability policy, successfully negotiated a settlement with the insurer on terms favorable to the client, and ultimately negotiated and successfully reached settlements on terms favorable to the client with all the remaining insurers. Briefed, argued, and defeated the insurer’s various jurisdictional and forum-related motions in trial court and through all levels of appeals.
  • Lead attorney on behalf of a major multinational manufacturer of heating and air conditioning equipment in a complex, multijurisdictional insurance and indemnity dispute between the client, its former division, and the client’s historic general liability insurers relating to coverage for the client’s historic asbestos liabilities, indemnity claims asserted by the client’s former division for the division’s asbestos liabilities, and the insurer’s retrospective premium obligation claims. Briefed, argued, and defeated the insurer’s and former division’s multiple summary judgment motions.

Select recent representative insurance counseling/transactional matters include:

  • Negotiated the underwriting and placement of a representations and warranty policy in connection with a client’s strategic acquisition, valued at $310 million, of the entire share capital of a provider of truckload carriage and logistics services.
  • Negotiated the underwriting and placement of a representations and warranty policy in connection with a private investment firm’s acquisition of the designer and builder of customized material handling systems, storage retrieval systems, and automated conveyance solutions for customers throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
  • Negotiated the underwriting and placement of a buy-side representations and warranty policy, and provided insurance diligence counseling and advice relating to the adequacy and responsiveness of the target’s existing liability insurance, in connection with a private equity client’s $300 million acquisition of one of the world’s largest manufacturers and distributors of polyurethane spray foam insulation, with operations in Canada and the United States.

Professional Activities

Lisa is a fellow of the American College of Coverage Counsel (“ACCC”), an invitation-only organization dedicated to improving the quality of the practice of insurance law and to increasing civility and professionalism in the field. The ACCC engages in a rigorous vetting process prior to inviting a lawyer to become a fellow, with its members including many of the most prominent advocates in the insurance law bar. She was selected to serve on ACCC’s Membership Committee for the 2024–2025 term.

Lisa is also a member of the American Bar Association’s Litigation Section, Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee and served on Law360's 2021 Insurance Editorial Advisory Board.
