John A. Adkins


    John Adkins is a business lawyer who practices primarily in the areas of finance, real estate, corporate, and general business transactions.

    John works with public and private companies and individuals on matters involving corporate and securities, real estate, insurance, and administrative law. The businesses he represents are in industries such as banking, real estate, construction materials, energy, technology, and food products. He often works with entrepreneurs and established businesses in mergers and acquisitions, financing transactions, contracts, and corporate governance.

    John previously has served as senior vice president/general counsel of a Houston-based bank, a senior officer of a public company providing diversified financial services throughout the United States, and in private practice in Texas. While in law school, he was the managing editor of the Texas Law Review.

            Outside the Firm

            John is a long-time volunteer with the University of Texas at Austin alumni association, including service as the national President in 2005–2006. He currently is a member of the UT Development Board as well as several UT advisory boards, including the Plan II Honors Program, the Stephen Hicks School of Social Work, and the School of Undergraduate Studies. John also was appointed by Texas Governor Bill Clements to serve as Chairman of a state agency, the Texas Hospital Equipment Financing Agency.


            John has significant experience representing his clients on matters involving:

            • Banking law: representation of banks and other lenders clients in commercial and real estate lending transactions, regulatory matters, workouts, collections, and mergers with other financial institutions.
            • Real Estate law: advice to private investors and business entrepreneurs in a variety of contracts; leasing, sales, and purchases of real estate; commercial development; dispute resolution; and investments.
            • Corporate acquisitions: representation of buyers and sellers in corporate mergers and acquisitions involving a wide range of industries, including food products, real estate, construction materials, energy, financial institutions, high-technology, food products, and transportation.
            • General business transactions: assistance to entrepreneurs and business enterprises in a wide range of projects, including financing transactions, service agreements, contracts, corporate restructuring projects, stock options, employment agreements, and corporate governance.

                Professional Activities

                John was selected to serve as the pro bono general counsel of the Harris County Hospital District Foundation, which provides support for a healthcare system that cares for all residents of Harris County, Texas. He and his wife Cynthia were recognized for their community and pro bono service by the Houston Texas Exes organization with a named Forty Acres Scholarship at the University of Texas at Austin.

                John is an active member of the Houston Bar Association, including its Real Estate Section. He has chaired several HBA committees, including the Continuing Legal Education committee. John is also an active member of the Dallas Bar Association.
