Diversity in Business Awards 2022: Melanie Carter, Blank Rome
Blank Rome partner Melanie S. Carter was one of 20 individuals named as a 2022 Diversity in Business honoree by the Philadelphia Business Journal. This is an annual recognition that highlights "diverse business leaders who have demonstrated success in their respective fields and through philanthropic endeavors."
The honorees were celebrated on August 25, 2022 at a live event in Philadelphia.

A partner in the commercial litigation practice at Philadelphia law firm Blank Rome for the past decade, Melanie Carter has made quite a mark. Her cases have included the representation of hundreds of commercial property owners in obtaining a declaration that the city engaged in unconstitutional law practices in tax year 2018. The decision was affirmed by the Commonwealth Court and this June the city’s appeal was denied by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

Proudest professional accomplishment so far: Fiercely advocating for a pro bono client such that opposing counsel withdrew claims against her, with prejudice, after six years of pending litigation. Also, speaking at a naturalization ceremony in Philadelphia to welcome some of our newest Americans from across the world into our country was an honor and a poignant reminder of the privilege to have been born a U.S. citizen.

Steps to be taken to better support diverse communities: Identify and embrace what we can do as individuals to have an impact on our world and support diverse communities. For example, finding a way to invest in education or supporting a school in an underserved or diverse community will help ensure that all children have access to excellent opportunities regardless of ZIP code or background.
