Virtual Legal Clinic: Insurance Assessment for Nonprofits

D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center

Online Webinar

Blank Rome Partners Kyle P. Brinkman and Justin F. Lavella, Of Counsel Linda A. Powell, and Associate Dominique A. Meyer will serve as attorney volunteers at the free Virtual Legal Clinic: Insurance Assessment for Nonprofits, sponsored by the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center and Blank Rome LLP, on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EDT.

Many nonprofits do not understand basic facts about their insurance, including what risks are covered by their policies; the circumstances that trigger or exclude coverage; and what the difference is between their carrier and their broker.

This free legal clinic will help D.C. nonprofits develop a better understanding of these issues. Nonprofit representatives will meet one-on-one with attorneys to run through a structured checklist of insurance and risk management-related questions, with the goal of clarifying key insurance concepts and spotting potential coverage issues.

Issues to be reviewed include:

  • What types of insurance does the organization have? General liability, D&O, employment practices liability, others? What types of additional or modified coverage might the organization need?
  • What are the limits and sub-limits under the policies?
  • What is the definition of a claim under their policies, and what are the notice provisions?

Prior to the clinic, Blank Rome Partner James S. Carter created a 55-minute on-demand training webinar for attorney volunteers, providing legal background on nonprofit insurance/risk management, an overview of the specific policies the clinic will be covering, and some practice tips to include or emphasize during the consultations.

The attorney training video is available on YouTube.
