20 People to Know in Law: Amy Joseph Coles, Blank Rome

Amy Joseph Coles was appointed to her role as Blank Rome LLP’s Pittsburgh office co-chair in February. She started her 20-plus-year legal career in Pittsburgh at Reed Smith LLP, then spent seven years at Duane Morris LLP before joining three other regional lawyers to help launch Blank Rome’s office in Pittsburgh in 2015. In addition to wide experience in construction matters, she also has represented financial services, healthcare and pharmaceutical.

What attracted you to the field of law?
Originally, I had my sights set on the medical profession. However, after college, my best friend who was already a law student told me that law school was “fun and really not that hard because there is only one test a semester.” I fell for it. But in all seriousness, I have always loved advocating, so litigation was a natural fit for me.

What do you see as your biggest accomplishment during your career?
It is hard to narrow it down to just one accomplishment, so I’ll briefly highlight my top three. One was making partner at the eight-year mark. Another has been forming amazing relationships with clients. In fact, most of my clients become close friends of mine because I treat their business as my own and get to know them so we can accomplish their goals. The most rewarding (and ongoing) accomplishment is the ability to support other women in this field.

As office co-chair, what are your most pressing goals for Blank Rome?
Pittsburgh is an important market for the firm, and we are focused on strategic growth to meet client needs. A key component of that is finding talent who will fit seamlessly into and help us maintain our collegial culture.
