Key Risk Management and Insurance Issues for In-House Counsel

ACC National Capital Region Chapter In-House Primer

Westwood Country Club
800 Maple Ave E
Vienna, VA

As a 2019 sponsor of the Association of Corporate Counsel’s (“ACC”) National Capital Region (“NCR”) Chapter, we are thrilled to be part of the Chapter’s inaugural In-House Primer—Exploring Key Topics Central to the Role of the General Counsel, being held in Vienna, Virginia, on Thursday, September 12, 2019, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. with a cocktail reception to follow.

The conference will address the key issues a new general counsel (“GC”) or small law department lawyer will face in their role, and how to uncover and tackle challenges within a variety of subject areas to achieve success. The In-House Primer will provide in-house counsel an opportunity to attend five CLE programs and hear from subject matter experts regarding employment issues, IP pitfalls, insurance and risk management, and basic corporate governance principles. Learn what you need to know and when to call outside assistance. In addition, there will be ample networking time over breakfast, lunch, and a reception at the end of the day, as well as a practical insight from seasoned GCs during a lunchtime panel.

Blank Rome Partner John A. Gibbons will co-present “Key Risk Management and Insurance Issues for In-House Counsel” with Julie Ortmeier, Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary at CARFAX, Inc., and Carnot Evans, Vice President & Senior Counsel at Marriott International, Inc., from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. The session will cover the key issues every General Counsel should know to protect and leverage insurance, ensuring that corporate insurance is aligned with the company’s business and risks to maximize its utility; insurance is pursued for potentially covered claims; and claims are submitted to insurers in a way that will maximize recovery.

In addition to using insurance for traditional risk transfer and mitigation, panelists will discuss how certain types of commercial insurance help companies reach their business expansion goals.

Topics covered will include insurance for:

  • Mass torts
  • Product liability
  • Class action & derivative claims
  • Property damage & business interruption
  • Cybersecurity & data breach
  • Representations & warranty
  • Credit risk

ACC NCR is expecting a capacity crowd for this first-ever event, and as part of John's presentation, he will be referencing ACC’s A Policyholder’s Primer on Commercial Insurance in the United States, which he just updated with other attorneys from Blank Rome’s Insurance Recovery group. This is a valuable tool for all in-house counsel and ACC members (including those not attending the event).
