Blank Rome Partners with HIAS Pennsylvania to Secure Asylum for Refugees from Afghanistan

A Blank Rome team, in partnership with HIAS Pennsylvania (“HIAS PA”) and additional volunteer attorneys from other law firms and businesses, successfully represented refugees from Afghanistan seeking asylum in the United States. Since September 2023, 23 refugees who fled Afghanistan in 2021 have been granted asylum and resettled in Philadelphia by HIAS PA's refugee resettlement program. These clients will be able to remain in the United States, reunite with their families, and eventually apply for U.S. citizenship.

The team collected client documentation; prepared client declarations about their fear of persecution by the Taliban; represented clients at their government interviews; and completed dozens of applications to ensure that the clients could continue to live and work in the United States while their asylum applications were pending.

Blank Rome was proud to be honored for its pro bono work on behalf of HIAS PA’s Afghan clients at their 2023 Golden Door Awards: United for Immigrants. Read more: Blank Rome's Pro Bono Work Recognized at HIAS Pennsylvania’s 2023 Golden Door Awards.
