About Sean W. Murphy

Sean Murphy works on state tax controversy and transactional tax matters.

Prior to joining the firm, Sean was a senior associate in the state and local tax (“SALT”) M&A practice of one of the big four accounting firms, where he performed SALT due diligence, structuring, and consulting for clients operating in diverse industries. His work included identifying historical state tax issues as well as prospective issues that arise in mergers, acquisitions, and restructurings, enabling private equity and strategic buyers to leverage purchase price and remedy exposures related to nexus, state nonconformity to federal principles, sales taxability, and many other issues. His experience includes income/franchise, gross receipts, sales/use, property, employment, and transfer taxes, as well as unclaimed property.

While earning his law degree, Sean interned at the big four accounting firms as well as at a multinational insurance company. He also served low-income taxpayers at the Cardozo Tax Law Clinic, and was a staff editor for the Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice.
