Biography

Dan Rylaarsdam has more than 20 years of insurance recovery and litigation experience. He focuses on negotiating and obtaining insurance benefits for public and private corporations, public entities, and individual policyholders in a broad range of complex, multi-million-dollar insurance coverage matters through litigation, mediation, and facilitated settlement.

Dan’s insurance recovery and litigation experience includes diverse first- and third-party disputes in California and around the nation involving directors’ and officers’ liability, entertainment claims, errors and omissions claims, first-party property/business interruption losses, commercial general liability policies, cyber risks, construction defects/additional insured issues, employment practices liability, and intellectual property claims. He also conducts insurance policy audits during underwriting and after placement to maximize his client’s potential for insurance recovery.

Notable matters on which Dan has worked include:

  • Obtaining millions of dollars in settlements for alleged failures of oversight/breach of fiduciary duties by a global media company’s directors and officers.
  • Negotiating contributions from a California public school district’s insurers in connection with settlements of negligent retention/hiring/supervision of teachers accused of sexual abuse.
  • Resolving coverage dispute with insurer under private company management indemnity policy, which resulted in successful resolution of underlying liability claims with insurer’s funds.
  • Consulting on coverage issues arising out of claims asserted against private equity firm concerning fraud and alter ego allegations.
  • Securing millions of dollars from public healthcare company’s insurer for settlement of invasion of privacy claims where insurer disputed the scope of coverage provided by its policy.

Dan is active in the American Bar Association Litigation Section. He currently serves as a co-chair of the Excess and Umbrella Subcommittee of the Section’s Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee and formerly as the Committee’s co-editor-in-chief.

Dan has been named to The Best Lawyers in America© Insurance Law list from 2020 to 2023.
