Biography
Carmella O’Hanlon focuses her practice on maritime law and complex commercial litigation but also has experience handling matters involving securities litigation, employment disputes, and bankruptcy. She also represents both domestic and international companies and individuals in civil and criminal investigations, enforcement actions, and regulatory inquiries involving the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”), Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”), Office of Foreign Assets Control (“OFAC”), Financial Industry Regulatory Authority ("FINRA”), and other regulatory bodies.
Carmella has extensive experience managing all aspects of litigation and regularly appears in federal and state court proceedings and has served in a first-chair capacity at court hearings and depositions. In addition to her litigation work, Carmella advises clients on U.S. economic sanctions, export controls, and anti-boycott regulations.
Prior to joining the firm, Carmella served as an associate at a U.S. law firm. While in law school, she served as a legal extern for the Administrative Law Division and a legal intern for the Enterprise, Major, and Cyber Crimes Division in the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. Carmella also served as an article’s editor and staff writer for the Boston College Law Review.
Outside the Firm
Carmella enjoys seeing Broadway shows and live music, traveling, and trying new restaurants.
Experience
- Represented vessel owner in a limitation action in the District of Massachusetts against claims of personal injuries and property damage arising from a vessel collision in Greece.
- Represented vessel owner in a proceeding in the High Court of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and obtained dismissal on the ground of forum non conveniens arising from an April 2021 ship collision in the port of Qingdao, China.
- Represented charterer in connection with contract dispute concerning the allocation of loss arising from a cargo fire aboard the owner’s vessel.
