Spear’s Review
Marilyn Chinitz of Blank Rome in New York is one of the U.S.’s most respected divorce lawyers, having confirmed her high profile with celebrity clients such as Tom Cruise, Michael Douglas, and a string of prominent business leaders and billionaires.
Her career in family law began when a partner at the corporate law firm she was working at asked her to consult on his own divorce privately. ‘It really opened my eyes; this is the area of law that I love,’ she says. ‘It involved valuation of assets, it involved trusts and estate issues, it involved tax issues. It was a very interesting area of the law that I felt I connected with, because I like people, I’m able to work well with people, they trust me, so I decided to leave the corporate litigation world.’
Her clients have felt the benefit ever since.

Spear’s Review
‘To represent clients – from helping people get married to helping them separate their lives and family – you need to have the ability to connect with them’ says Blank Rome partner Lois J. Liberman, who is adept and sensitive in helping couples with the practical and emotional fallout from divorce.
Working within the firm’s matrimonial and family law practice group, she handles cases involving pre- and postnuptial agreements, custody matters, and paternity disputes. Liberman also conducts a webinar, Look Ahead with Lois Liberman, which addresses a variety of issues, including co-parenting, narcissism, and coercive control.
Liberman previously told Spear’s that despite 50 percent of relationships in the U.S. ending in some sort of divorce or break-up, ‘people still have not been turned off by the process ... We’re still having a lot of prenuptial agreements.’
Given the U.S.’s backed-up court system, mediation, and arbitration have become increasingly useful tools, Liberman explains. ‘We are definitely using the alternative dispute resolution model. The problem is that you can only get people to agree when you’ve got someone reasonable on the other side and, unfortunately, in my world that is not always the case.’
