Karen Read, the Massachusetts woman accused of killing her police officer boyfriend John O'Keefe in a trial that captured the nation, has been found not guilty of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death.

Moments after the jury acquitted Read of murder, Judge Beverly Cannone sentenced her to one year of probation for operating a vehicle under the influence.

Rither Alabre, a former New York City prosecutor and now a partner in the Blank Rome law firm, told USA TODAY he was not surprised Read was given probation, given that she is a first-time offender on that charge.

"It would have been highly unusual for the court to have sentenced her to anything but probation given the fact that the prosecutor recommended probation," Alabre said.
