Trump Order Rallies Cannabis Industry, Advocates Want More

The executive order signed by President Donald Trump on Thursday, marking the most substantial shift in federal cannabis policy in over half a century, is expected to have favorable ramifications for the marijuana industry even as it falls short of decriminalizing the drug or resolving the many tensions between federal and state law.

Shane Pennington, a partner at Blank Rome LLP who represented pro-rescheduling parties at the DEA tribunal, told Law360, "I'm thrilled that President Trump has committed to ... moving forward with urgently needed research that should have been done years ago."

"Those of us who have been working in the trenches on this process for years are prepared to see it through to a final rule and to defend that final rule in federal court when the time comes," Pennington added. "Today is historic, but much work lies ahead."
