Karen Read, the Massachusetts woman accused of killing her police officer boyfriend John O'Keefe in a trial that captured the nation, has been found not guilty of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death.

Moments after the jury acquitted Read of murder, Judge Beverly Cannone sentenced her to one year of probation for operating a vehicle under the influence.

Rither Alabre, a former New York City prosecutor and now a partner in the Blank Rome law firm, told USA TODAY&nbsp;he was not surprised Read was given probation, given that she is a first-time offender on that charge.

"It would have been highly unusual for the court to have sentenced her to anything but probation given the fact that the prosecutor recommended probation,"&nbsp;Alabre said.
