Blank Rome LLP's Lamiya Rahman helped several liquefied natural gas companies secure Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approvals for their multibillion-dollar projects and helped BP America broker a favorable settlement in a high-profile FERC enforcement case, earning her a spot among the energy law practitioners under age 40 honored by Law360 as Rising Stars.
Why she became an energy regulatory attorney:
Rahman had her eye on a career in foreign policy, but during law school, she worked as a paralegal in the energy and commodities practice at McDermott Will & Emery LLP. It was in the aftermath of the financial crisis and the development of the Dodd-Frank Act, which brought major changes to energy markets.
"I was lucky, even though I was a paralegal, to be given a lot of substantive training, to have a lot of ability to work with the attorneys and clients, and really take a bite out of doing some meaty work in terms of research … reviewing documents, putting together policy documents [and] working on rulemaking comments," Rahman said.
