Richard A. Schafer


Richard Schafer advises clients on ownership of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and computer software; provides counsel on intellectual property portfolios, including what protection to seek and where; prepares and prosecutes patents, copyrights, and trademarks; and provides counsel on licensing agreements. Richard concentrates his intellectual property practice on transactional aspects of intellectual property, both in patent and trademark prosecution.


Richard is a registered patent attorney with significant experience in patent preparation and prosecution, focusing on:

  • computer and network hardware and software
  • telecommunications
  • cybersecurity


Richard helps clients develop trademark portfolios in variety of industries, including managing a worldwide trademark portfolio for a pet food manufacturer.

In addition to patent and trademark preparation and prosecution, Richard has significant experience with the licensing and acquisition of intellectual property rights, due diligence in business transactions such as mergers and acquisitions, and development of intellectual property programs for clients.

Prior to practicing law, Richard supported campus-wide computing and networking for Rice University, and developed electronic mail software for his own company.

Professional Activities

Richard is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Association for Computing Machinery. Richard continues his long-time involvement with Rice University by serving as a judge at the Rice University Business Plan Competition, the world’s richest and largest graduate-level student startup competition.
