Mitchell S. Goldberg

Biography

Mitchell S. Goldberg is a distinguished former Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, known for his deep judicial insight and decades of experience resolving complex business disputes.

Having presided over high-stakes matters across industries, Judge Goldberg developed significant experience in intellectual property matters. In particular, he presided over pharmaceutical patent disputes and related antitrust litigation, including extensive Hatch-Waxman work, gained over more than a decade as a visiting judge in the District of Delaware, the nation’s preeminent patent court.

At Blank Rome, Judge Goldberg draws on a unique blend of federal and state court service, private practice leadership, and public sector experience to guide clients through high-stakes litigation, appeals, and alternative dispute resolution.

Judge Goldberg’s legal career began at the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, where he worked in both the trial and appellate divisions. He advanced to a multinational law firm, focusing on commercial litigation and ultimately serving as senior partner and manager of the firm’s Arson and Fraud Unit. Returning to public service in 1997, Judge Goldberg became an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, handling sophisticated white collar crime cases before both the District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

In 2003, he was elected to a judgeship on the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas. Judge Goldberg was then nominated by the president to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in October 2008. He became Chief Judge in March 2024.

A graduate of Temple University Beasley School of Law and a member of Temple’s inaugural trial team, Judge Goldberg remains committed to advancing the legal profession as an Adjunct Professor at Temple Law, where he teaches federal law and advanced trial advocacy.
