Biography

Alan focuses his practice on patent prosecution, working closely with clients to develop and manage their patent portfolio. Alan has also represented clients in patent litigation matters and IPR proceedings. He applies a holistic approach, taking into consideration the full lifecycle of a patent.

By aligning intellectual property strategies with business goals, Alan helps clients protect and maximize the value of their innovations. His experience spans a wide range of technologies, including medical and surgical devices, robotics, automotive and aerospace systems, and heavy machinery. He conducts due diligence analysis and prepares freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and non-infringement opinions.

As a former patent examiner, Alan has a deep understanding of the patent process and how to navigate cases through the United States Patent and Trademark Office. His ability to analyze complex issues and present well-structured arguments before examiners help streamline the process, reducing time and costs while securing robust patent protection.

Experience

  • Defended a multinational HVAC manufacturer through trial in a patent infringement matter against an industry competitor in Baltimore, MD. After a 2-week trial, the jury returned a complete defense verdict for the client, finding the first set of claims of the asserted patent were invalid and that the second set of claims were not infringed.
  • Represented a government contractor in a patent litigation matter before the U.S. Court of Federal Claims under 28 U.S.C. ยง 1498 involving laser range finders.
  • Represented a patent owner in an inter partes review proceeding before the PTAB relating to earphones/headphones with magnetic input controls.
