James J. Quinlan


James Quinlan is a member of our Maritime Emergency Response Team (“MERT”).

James Quinlan concentrates his practice on complex tort litigation, with particular emphasis on matters arising from product liability, aviation, maritime, and other transportation accidents.

James’ other litigation experience includes commercial and insurance-related disputes. He is also experienced with motions practice, oral argument, the discovery process, trial practice, and post-trial work.

Before entering private practice, James clerked for the Honorable Daryl F. Todd, Sr., J.S.C. of the Superior Court of New Jersey, Civil Part.

Outside the Firm

James was appointed to Ventnor City Ad Hoc Citizen Advisory Committee in 2020 and was reappointed for 2021. He also serves on the Advisory Board for the St. Leonard Association, which is the oldest homeowner's association in the State of New Jersey.



  • Served as first chair trial counsel in the defense of international logistics company against allegations of intentional torts.
  • Served as first chair trial counsel in minority shareholder oppression dispute.
  • Served as second chair trial counsel in the defense of a major airline against allegations of negligence and intentional torts and helped secure a complete defense verdict.


  • Represented recreational aviation non-profit organization against allegations of negligence and assisted in securing complete dismissal of claim.
  • Represented charter aviation carrier in airplane lease dispute and assisted client in achieving successful resolution of matter.
  • Represented airport owners and/or operators against wrongful death and traumatic personal injury claims.


  • Secured summary judgment for a national tug boat company against Jones Act claimant.
  • Counseled foreign vessel owner and vessel’s captain on potential environmental claims from discharge and arranged for timely release of vessel from port while avoiding vessel’s arrest.
  • Represented major fuel distribution company in multimillion-dollar fuel terminal allision cases.

General Negligence and Product Liability Claims

  • Secured summary judgment for trucking service repair company against a multimillion-dollar product liability and negligence wrongful death claim that stemmed from a catastrophic trucking accident.
  • Successfully defended sprinkler installer against multimillion-dollar claims involving fire casualty and significant water discharge.
  • Represented major trucking company in defense of negligence and indemnity claims brought by a large manufacturing shipper and assisted client in achieving successful resolution of matter.

Professional Activities

James was elected as the 21st president of the Philadelphia Brehon Law Society for the 2016–2017 term. He remains a member of the Brehon Executive Committee. James is also a Board Member for the non-profit Brehon Society Foundation, which provides scholarships to law school students. James is actively involved with the George Washington University Alumni Association. He served as Vice President for Awards for the Alumni Association’s Executive Committee, and as co-chair for the Philadelphia GW Alumni Network. He presently serves as a Member at the GWU Columbian College National Council for Arts and Sciences. James also serves on the Subcommittee for Legal Affairs for Irish Memorial Board of Directors and he is a member of the Golf Steering Committee for the American Ireland Fund’s Philadelphia Outing.

James is a member of Blank Rome’s Philadelphia Pro Bono Coordinating Committee and he participates the Firm’s internship program as a litigation adviser held in conjunction with a Temple University/Tsinghua University international studies LLM.
