To have a successful career in law female partners must distinguish themselves from the masses and play to their key strengths, that’s according to a panel of some of Greater Philadelphia’s top attorneys.

The 45-minute discussion focused on breaking down barriers for women working in large firms. It was the closing segment of the Philadelphia Business Journal’s Women in Law event. The panelists discussed compensation, their personal methods for navigating working in large firms and business and client development.

Alan J. Hoffman, chairman and managing partner at Blank Rome, was the only man to speak on any of the morning’s panels. It was important to have a man’s perspective in those kinds of discussions, Liebenberg added.

“[Men] are our colleagues helping move the needle forward,” Liebenberg said.

Several of the panelists said many, if not all, of their mentors in law were men. Those men helped push them and ensure they have a path forward in their career.

“It’s our responsibility to recognize that women may have a little more of a challenge than men in business development,” Hoffman said.

Blank Rome has initiatives and summits for its female attorneys to help them get to positions of leadership in the firm, he added.
