Interview Excerpt

Jayme Butcher was one of the founding attorneys of Blank Rome's new Pittsburgh office in 2015. Since that time, she has moved rapidly up the ranks and now serves as vice chair practice leader for the firm's commercial litigation practice group, which includes Blank Rome attorneys from around the country. Butcher is very involved in philanthropic efforts, and was named Woman of the Year in 2017 by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Pennsylvania and West Virginia chapter for her fundraising efforts.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

I would tell my 18-year-old self to study abroad during college. I wish that I had taken that opportunity in college because it is really something that you may never have a chance to do again. The amount of money incurred would have been well worth the once-in-a-lifetime experience. This is something I will definitely encourage my daughter to do.

Did you have a career turning point?

When I was a young lawyer, one of my mentors left the firm where I was practicing. His departure really shook me and I panicked thinking how can I do this without him to help guide my career. It took me awhile, but then I realized that I should use this scary time in my life as an opportunity to grow and lead. The experience made me expand what I thought I was capable of, and I ended up surprising myself. As scary as that turning point was, it led me to where I am today, and I couldn’t be more appreciative for the experience.
