Judge Lewis was recognized in the Lifetime Achievement category, honoring attorneys who have made a significant impact on the legal history of the states throughout their careers.

Change in the legal field seems to be ever accelerating. What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in the profession during your career?
Technological developments have significantly enhanced our abilities to perform our professional duties. The sheer pace of the practice of law is staggering compared to when I started. We must never allow this to interfere with the importance of meaningful reflection before making a decision or offering professional advice. But the most important developments I have observed over the past 45 years are the opportunities for women, people of color, and other minorities to fully participate in every aspect of the legal profession. We have more to do in this respect, but diversity and inclusion have redefined the profession and better aligned it with the ideals and values upon which the law itself is based.
How have you adapted to these changes while maintaining your commitment to justice and client service?
I have worked hard throughout my career to help make things just a bit more equal for all in our communities and throughout our profession. This includes work on behalf of clients and professional organizations, serving on boards of non-profits focused on redressing inequities, and broadening representation in our judiciary among groups that had been historically excluded. As we adapt to these important changes, we at once further our commitment to justice and improve our client service. They are inextricably intertwined in my view.
