Being Diligent

Providing an overview on key issues and updates was Washington-based Matthew Thomas,a Partner in Blank Rome and who specializes in international trade, transport and maritime regulation and government affairs. With over 20 years of experience in representing leading energy and commodities companies, shipowners, governments, insurers, investors, ports, shipyards, and marine terminal operators,  Matthew served as a fitting candidate to cover such a topic.

Commenting on sanctions best practices, Matthew stated,  “Last May, the US president announced America’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a move that largely impacts non-U.S. businesses. In particular, the most common source of sanctions-related difficulty for non-US maritime companies is related to the use of US dollars. Since US dollar transactions generally clear through US banks, even if there is no other US persons involvement, any dollar payment linked to Iran or other sanctions targets can bring the transaction within the jurisdictional scope of the primary US sanctions regulations.
