BigLaw Leans on Partners to Aid in Lateral Integration

Law360 Pulse

After a big hiring spree over the last two years, large law firms are looking for ways to retain their new talent, and many are leaning on existing partners when it comes to integration efforts.

Leaders at other firms described similar scenarios where staff coordinated efforts to enlist existing partners in the integration process.

"The core to the integration strategy is all of the various administrative people. We have a sort of SWAT team that works with every lateral to onboard them," said Lawrence Flick II, vice chair of Blank Rome LLP.

That team includes the firm's director of partner recruiting and integration; marketing professionals; the client intake team; and technology professionals, Flick said.

The firm launched a new program in 2019 in which each new lateral is paired with an existing partner who takes them under their wing and helps them make connections for their business development goals and also introduces them to people on the ground in their office. It's the administrative professionals who make those pairings work, Flick said.
