Espionage is alive and well in the United Kingdom and the European Union. Numerous media articles over the past six months report intensified and multi-pronged efforts by individuals allegedly acting on behalf of Russia and China to gather and transmit an array of sensitive data and information. In particular, the war in Ukraine has catalyzed these efforts in Europe as Russia seeks to obtain information about the NATO nations’ support for Ukraine and to disrupt that support. U.S., UK, and EU intelligence and law enforcement agencies face cross-border coordination and investigatory obstacles in addressing these actions but once charges are brought, how can defense attorneys effectively represent clients in these complex and challenging cases?
