Diamonds Are Forever, Divorce Rings Are for What Comes After

The diamond ring Alex Weinstein wears every day is a reminder that, though once upon a time she said “I do,” these days she happily says she does not.

Weinstein got divorced last March and tossed her engagement ring in a drawer for a few months. Then, the Tampa, Fla.-based content creator decided to make herself a “divorce ring.”

In divorce litigation, some states in the U.S. consider the engagement ring to be a “conditional gift” that belongs to the recipient after marriage, said Jackie Combs, a marriage and family law attorney at Blank Rome. Sometimes women tell Suarez, the Tampa jeweler, that they fear their diamonds come with bad energy, but she said she firmly tells them to “stop giving an object so much power.”
