BACKGROUND

Education: University of Pittsburgh (B.A.), DePaul University College of Law (J.D.)

ON THE JOB

How would you describe your job and what you do to someone you just met? I’m a partner in Blank Rome’s finance and restructuring practice. I have over 20 years of experience guiding financial institutions in high-stakes and complex insolvency matters, litigation and lending transactions. I work closely with clients to provide business-oriented, efficient, effective and creative solutions.

What’s a go-to interview question you use to draw out a unique response from a prospective employee? My go-to interview question is “What was your first job in high school?” The answer to this question usually explores well beyond that first job and provides a window to a candidate’s work ethic, path to a legal career and aspirations.

Once on the job, what mistake do young professionals make, and how would you advise them to avoid it? A common mistake is failing to communicate and failing to communicate well. Communication is the foundation of every relationship — whether inside or outside the workplace. I encourage young professionals to observe and learn the communication styles of their team and leaders and then strive to find a way to participate in a meaningful way to ensure that the team is communicating clearly and efficiently. A team that communicates well is always going to outperform one that does not.

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Do you serve as a mentor for someone? If so, how do you fill that role? I’ve served as a mentor to many junior attorneys and professionals throughout my career. My approach is to give them hands-on experience that encourages them to develop their problem-solving skills, use their own creativity and tackle challenges while always knowing I’m there to guide them and as a sounding board.
