Blank Rome’s Peg Hill Named an “Influential Woman in Energy Law” by Law360

Blank Rome Partner Margaret Anne Hill, who serves as co-chair of the Firm’s Energy, Environment, and Mass Torts group, has been named to Law360’s inaugural list of Influential Women in Energy Law, which profiles 10 women who have “made waves as energy regulators, litigators, and dealmakers,” and is meant to put the spotlight on attorneys who are “helping reshape an industry and practice area long perceived to be a man's world.”

As a kid growing up near Philadelphia, Blank Rome’s Margaret Anne Hill discovered her affinity for the law watching Perry Mason reruns. She stayed true to her childhood dream and ended up handling a flood of business from the Pennsylvania shale boom, working on massive projects like a $6 billion Shell petrochemical facility, overseeing risk analyses for a slew of mergers and acquisitions, and helping companies fend off litigation and enforcement actions — earning herself a place among Law360’s Influential Women in Energy Law.

Hill co-chairs Blank Rome’s energy, environment and mass torts practice group, and has been practicing in state and federal energy and environmental law for more than 30 years. It’s turned out to be a little different from the courtroom dramas she enjoyed as a child, but has been a rewarding ride all its own, she said.

The diversity of her experience has become one of Hill’s greatest strengths, and she said young attorneys looking to succeed in the field should do as much as they can to learn about the various facets of energy law.

“The second thing is enthusiasm and interest in what you do. I don’t care whether you graduated from the worst law school or the best law school, if you don't have enthusiasm for what you do you will never be a good lawyer,” she said.

Working in an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated, Hill also said she’s never thought of herself as a female lawyer, but rather just a lawyer, and she said women in the energy law field should keep their focus on providing good counsel to clients.

“When you’re sitting in a meeting, and whether you’re the only woman in a group of men or you’re with a lot of different colleagues of both sexes, as long as you’re offering practical, good judgment and you’re listening and paying attention and showing sensitivity that’s appropriate to whatever you’re discussing — you’ll do well,” she said.
