A Meeting with the Barristers: Theodore Roosevelt American Inn of Court

Nassau County Bar Association
15 West St, Mineola, NY

Blank Rome Litigation associate Amelia Clegg served as a panelist for the Theodore Roosevelt American Inn of Court’s meeting on April 20, 2023. The program was titled “A Meeting with the Barristers: The Influence of English Law on American Common Law Jurisprudence and a Comparison of Current English and American Law in the Areas of Defamation and Criminal Law.” Amelia spoke about her experience working as a criminal barrister in England, and on some of the differences between the criminal justice system in the UK and the United States. Amelia was able to share her unique perspective of having practiced on both sides of the Atlantic, as barrister in London, and now as a New York attorney.

Amelia was joined by Jonathan Schaffer-Goddard (Holwell Shuster & Goldberg LLP, 4 Pump Court) and several students from the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University for this program. Amelia worked with the program chairs, the Honorable Judge Andrea Phoenix and Lois Carter Schlissel (Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C.), on the substantive materials for this program. She also got to dust off her wig and gown for the Inn members!

Amelia and Jonathan were honored by remarks from the Honorable Norman St. George, Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for Courts Outside New York City, for their contribution to the program. The event was made possible through the Theodore Roosevelt American Inn of Court, and in particular through the tireless and generous efforts of the Honorable Andrea Phoenix and Lois Carter Schlissel.
