The Impact of Women in the Transport Industry: Digitalisation as a Mean of Empowerment
Blank Rome Partner Jeremy A. Herschaft will be a guest speaker and moderator for the “The Impact of Women in the Transport Industry: Digitalisation as a Mean of Empowerment” panel, as part of the 58th Annual International Young Lawyers' Congress, on Thursday, August 27, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. EDT. He will be introducing Sylvia Boer, President of WISTA in the Netherlands and the Director of Amsterdam IJmuiden Offshore Ports (AYOP). Blank Rome is proud to sponsor this year's virtual event, which is themed “United in Diversity: Empowering our Future.”
About the Session
The transportation industry has traditionally been a male-dominated sector. While the number of women ashore and on board has significantly increased over the past years, still only 22% of transport workers are women. Even to date there are only a few best practices in place and no systematic gender inclusion procedures are available for transport. Neither the training of professionals nor the design and planning of systems, services and equipment reflect the requirements of over half of the world’s population. Due to the lack of protocols or sanctions applicable to those who fail to consider gender aspects, the topic of gender diversity in transport is often overlooked.
During the session, panelists will discuss their experiences in the shipping industry, their efforts to make the transport sector gender balanced, and how they promote diversity to the maritime community. They will also illustrate how innovation and digitalisation will lead to diversity, inclusion, and new opportunities for women in transport.
