Affinity Group: Attorneys of Color


Blank Rome has long been a leader in efforts to diversify the legal profession. The Firm was formed in 1946 by lawyers who—because of their ethnicity—were barred from joining many established law firms. The founders' vision for the Firm was of a place where people of diverse backgrounds could gather to practice law.

In 2008, Blank Rome launched Firm-wide affinity groups, including the Attorneys of Color (“AoC”) Affinity Group.  Co-chaired by Cheryl Chang, Partner in the Los Angeles office, and Stanley Tarr, Partner in the Wilmington office, the Affinity Group that provides a forum for our diverse lawyers to network and exchange ideas.

To help support the Firm's diversity and inclusion initiatives, the Firm joined the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (“LCLD”), an organization that is dedicated to creating a truly diverse legal profession.  LCLD’s Fellows Program—of which Blank Rome is a member of—is designed to help retain and mobilize the leadership of professionals who are employed in corporations, law firms, hospitals, academic, and other institutions.  Every year, more than a hundred young lawyers are encouraged to make the most of their careers—ultimately diversifying the leadership of the legal profession.

In 2017, Blank Rome nominated Mayling Blanco, a partner in the Firm's New York office, to participate. Of Counsel Michael Kim was our LCLD Fellow in 2016, and Associate Morgan Fraser Mouchette in 2015. 

Christopher Lewis, Blank Rome's Chief Officer for Diversity and Inclusion, and long time partner in the Commercial Litigation practice group and co-chair of the Firm's Diversity Committee, is an active participant and sponsor of each affinity group.
