$12.4 Million Condemnation Award for Jersey City Property

Blank Rome obtained a $12.4 million condemnation award in the Superior Court of New Jersey on behalf of our client, Edwin Siegel.  Our client’s 42-acre tract of property, located between Route 1&9 and the Hackensack River in Jersey City, NJ, is part of what was once known as the PJP Landfill Superfund Site – and at one time was one of the most hazardous waste sites in the nation.

The City of Jersey City made an attempt to obtain the property for little to no cost by rezoning that area of the City for only the allowance of open space and recreational use. After nearly 20 years of environmental, toxic tort and insurance-related litigation, and years of litigation with the City of Jersey City, the City agreed to purchase the property by way of a "friendly" condemnation. Jersey City has plans to convert the property into a park and community center.
