Piracy: Where Are We Today? Where Should We Be Tomorrow?
John D. Kimball, partner at Blank Rome, will be speaking on a panel discussion on the topic of piracy at the American Petroleum Institute's (API) Biennial Tanker Conference 2012, held May 21-22, at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Orlando, FL.
Mr. Kimball's panel on "Piracy: Where Are We Today? Where Should We Be Tomorrow?" will commence at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, May 21. The panel members will review navigating piracy prone waters, piracy issues and experiences, and combating piracy. Some of the questions to be discussed by the panel include:
- What are the key decision points a shipowner needs to consider prior to engaging a charter that has a vessel entering a high-risk area?
- How does piracy differ from the other security issues a vessel faces?
- What are the impacts of piracy on businesses and business models?
- What is/should be the role of the government in protecting commercial shipping assets?
- In regards to the legal framework for prosecuting piracy, is catch and release working? Should it continue? What might be the other alternatives?
- How should the maritime industry engage governments? Is there one organization best suited to engage governments on behalf of the industry?
The conference will also include a keynote address and other panel discussions on:
- Navigating Washington: Insight for the Oil & Gas Industry
- Sustaining a Zero Incident Safety Culture
- Speaking with One Voice on the Environment
