In Its 15th Year, Women's Networking Group Still Develops Close Bonds
October 31, 2017
In a profession dominated by men, a group of successful female attorneys have learned that close professional and personal bonds are invaluable tools for a legal career. FANG, as the group is known, is ready to sharpen the teeth of new generations of attorneys.
The Female Attorney Networking Group counts among its members lawyers as Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, Arent Fox LLP and Paul Hastings LLP, and in-house attorneys at Anthem Inc, the Walt Disney Co. and the Los Angeles Times.
For nearly 15 years, the group has met quarterly to discuss the legal business, support each other's causes and offer other counsel during times of hardship. They refer cases and clients and provide unique insight when a member decides to make a career move.
"We've been through it all together: marriages, deaths, children, divorces, changes in job," recounted Stacy D. Phillips, a partner at Blank Rome LLP.
Considering how best to pass FANG's collective wisdom to a new generation, Phillips said she has made it her business to continue what Bain and Gerber envisioned in 2003.
In doing so, Phillips has enlisted three young Blank Rome attorneys, two in Los Angeles and one in New York, to start three new chapters.
Caroline Powell Donelan, an associate at the firm who is up for partner vote, has taken on the mantle. She said that there has been progress for women in the legal profession. Some potential clients ask how many equity partners at a firm are women, she said, but insisted there is a ways to go. Donelan said she hopes to build on the legacy of women like Bain, Gerber and Phillips.
"There are times when I'm at work at 1 a.m. where I'm thinking, 'I've missed my kid's event at preschool and I feel alone,'" she said. "But I'm not, there are a lot of other women feeling the same way."
