What do you know now that you wish you'd known when you started your career?
Two things: the power of building and nurturing relationships early on in your career, and taking more risks and in turn not being afraid of failure or rejection.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a CEO, and how did you respond?
I began my leadership roles at the same time both of my predecessors left abruptly in the middle of their terms. Since this was not a typical transition or timeline, I needed to quickly establish myself, share my vision for the firm, and develop my style as a leader in this capacity. Up until this point, I had focused my career on being a "bet-the-company” case litigator on behalf of my clients, and was very successful in this regard. While I still draw upon those courtroom/litigation skills today, I have certainly learned to take a step back and evaluate all of the things that make an organization successful (the people, the business, the culture) with a softer approach, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the process.
Tell us about the one decision you have made for your business over the past few years that has been the most critical to its growth.
While we certainly love Philadelphia, and celebrate our roots, I knew that to continue to grow and effectively serve our clients, we had to establish a key presence in other tier-one cities. Over the past five years, I have made it a priority to create a thriving national footprint for Blank Rome, and we now have 13 offices throughout the United States and one in Shanghai. In addition, 60 percent of our current lawyers have joined us since 2011 and 70 percent of our equity partners are situated in locations outside of Philadelphia. The growth has been steady and strategic and I'm extremely proud of where we are today and where we're going.
