Alan Freeman counsels and assists clients in the hospitality, retail, real estate, and maritime industries.  Mr. Freeman devotes his practice to helping clients with civil and commercial litigation matters in federal and state courts and in arbitration proceedings.  He concentrates on reducing his client’s litigation risk and resolving disputes when they arise.  Mr. Freeman assists a  wide range of clients in areas such as:

  • contract disputes, business torts, and trade secrets litigation
  • environmental contamination and remediation disputes
  • professional liability
  • employment and discrimination
  • civil rights investigations and racial profiling
  • internal and public investigations
  • admiralty claims and regulatory disputes
  • securities fraud and investigations
  • police brutality allegations, unlawful detention, and use of force

  • Representation of a regional hospitality and entertainment venue in breach of contract and business tort litigation arising out of a line-run bus service agreement.
  • Representation of an international consulting firm in breach of contract litigation against a former business partner.
  • Representation of a national hospitality company in defense of discrimination and breach of contract claims asserted by a former business partner involved in restaurant operations.
  • Representation of a real estate developer in contract and business tort litigation with its joint venture partner.
  • Representation of the operating tenant of commercial property in litigation with a construction company arising out of the remediation of contaminated soils.
  • Representation of the operator of a commercial passenger vessel in litigation arising out of a collision on the Mississippi River.
  • Representation of an investment firm and its principal in SEC civil enforcement proceedings.
  • Representation of an international industrial auctioneer in litigation arising out of an auction of marine and other industrial equipment.
  • Representation of a national retailer in defense of class-action discrimination claims brought on behalf of customers.
  • Representation of a major metropolitan city and its primary law enforcement agency in connection with a Department of Justice “pattern and practice” investigation into excessive use of force.

COMMUNITY SERVICE & AFFILIATIONS

Mr. Freeman is active in the civic community of Montgomery County, Maryland. He holds an appointment by the County Executive to the Western Montgomery County Citizens Advisory Board, which he chaired during 2005, and he serves on several citizen advisory boards to the Montgomery County Department of Police.  He is a member of the Board of Governors of the Charles E. Smith Life Communities, and he is Vice President of the Boards of Directors of two of the organization's homes, Ring House and Landow House.

Mr. Freeman also is active in the Maryland and District of Columbia legal communities, where he is a member of the Maryland Court of Appeals Character Committee, the DC Bar Foundation’s Advisory Committee, and the William B. Bryant American Inn of Court. 

Mr. Freeman is a leader in Columbia University’s alumni community, where he serves on the Board of Directors of the Columbia College Alumni Association and chairs the Association’s Washington Steering and Alumni Representative Committees.
