Jo Anne Schwendinger concentrates her practice on cybersecurity preparedness and data governance matters, and international commercial and corporate transactions. She also has expertise in letters of credit, international trade finance, and corporate lending.
Prior to joining Blank Rome, Ms. Schwendinger served as the head of John Deere’s global information management practice group, where she focused on data incident preparedness and response, data governance and privacy. She also advised on IT procurement and technology product development.
Before this role, she served as Deere’s regional general counsel for Asia-Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa. Located in Singapore, she advised on commercial law matters throughout the region, including in Singapore, China, India, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. These matters included acquisitions and JV due diligence, agreements, integration, and dissolution; cross-border reorganizations; multi-jurisdictional dealer and supplier disputes; and complex business agreements. She also conducted compliance investigations in Korea, Singapore, South Africa, and Thailand.
She began her tenure at John Deere in the company’s financial services division, where her last assignment was as deputy chief counsel & managing attorney. In that role she formed strategic alliances with banks in Central America, South Africa, and India, and negotiated international trade finance, and corporate funding transactions.
Prior to John Deere, Ms. Schwendinger was a founding partner of Rizza & Schwendinger in Pittsburgh, PA, where she worked closely with clients to conclude successful lending and leasing transactions. Before that, she was in-house counsel to Mellon Bank, where, in addition to corporate lending, she developed a letter of credit and international trade finance practice
Ms. Schwendinger is a thought leader, speaking frequently on cybersecurity and international transactions. She is routinely published in leading legal publications, such as the International In-House Counsel Journal and ACC Docket. During law school, Ms. Schwendinger was the managing editor of the Law Review.
Ms. Schwendinger is fluent in French, highly proficient in Spanish, and has reading fluency in Italian and Portuguese.
COMMUNITY SERVICE & AFFILIATIONS
Before joining Blank Rome, Ms. Schwendinger was an active member of the in-house bar association, the Association of Corporate Counsel (“ACC”), serving as a member of ACC’s board of directors for the 2015–2018 term, president of ACC’s Singapore Chapter from 2013–2014, and member of ACC’s Advisory Council for Asia from 2012–2013.
She is also a member of the Sedona Working Group 11 (Data Security and Privacy Liability) and of the Advisory Board of the Center for International Legal Education, University of Pittsburgh School of Law. She is a past board member and president of the Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors (now GlobalPittsburgh).
She previously served as chair of the Pennsylvania Article 5 (Uniform Commercial Code – Letters of Credit) Committee; member of the Allegheny County Bar Association Business Law Council; and member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Business Law Council.
