Donald A. Gregory

Donald Gregory has more than 35 years of experience in the intellectual property field. He runs an active intellectual property counseling practice, which involves advising clients on the development, procurement, utilization, management, protection, and enforcement of their intellectual property rights, and on the establishment of company intellectual property programs and defensive strategies.

In addition, Mr. Gregory maintains a strong focus on intellectual property licensing and acquisition. He has prepared and negotiated hundreds of agreements relating to patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret licensing, product distribution, value-added reselling, joint development, consulting, and sponsored research.

Intellectual Property Counseling

He has handled the filing and prosecution of hundreds of patent and trademark applications for firm clients in the United States and throughout the world. Mr. Gregory has experience in many technical areas and industries, including medical devices, automotive racing, industrial and machine tools, closures, mining, fasteners, instrumentation, materials processing, aerospace, insurance, software, electrical power generation, nuclear energy and personal care products.

Intellectual Property Licensing and Acquisition

He has experience in the areas of software, retailing, restaurants, entertainment, television production, manufacturing, and marketing. Mr. Gregory has handled the transfer of intellectual property rights for hundreds of business acquisitions. In addition, he has represented clients in bringing their intellectual property to market through identifying and negotiating with appropriate purchasers or licensees.

As patent counsel for Philip Morris Incorporated (1981-1985), Mr. Gregory managed mechanical and biotech patent matters, as well as consulting, university-sponsored research, and licensing matters. He was a patent attorney at McDermott Inc., with responsibility for the intellectual property program of the Nuclear Power Generation Division of The Babcock & Wilcox Company (1979-1981). He previously served as an engineer for The Babcock & Wilcox Company, where his work included performing nuclear and thermal hydraulic design of commercial nuclear reactors and nuclear fuel shipping casks, and writing a computer code used for designing nuclear reactor control rods (1973-1976). In prior work for the University of Virginia, he wrote a computer code used for performing neutron activation analysis for identifying isotopes present in radioactive materials.


Mr. Gregory is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (“AIPLA”) and its licensing committee; the Licensing Executive Society, where he serves as a member of various committees; Fairfax Bar Association; Virginia State Bar (Member, Intellectual Property Section and International Section); Phi Delta Phi; American Nuclear Society (1980-1981); and Engineer Club of Richmond, Virginia (1982-1984). He was a U.S. correspondent for patents and trademarks for European Intellectual Property Review (1988-2011).
